HDPE Geomembrane Installation Guide: 10 Key Technical Points from Base Preparation to Final Acceptance

1. Why HDPE Geomembrane Has Become the Mainstream Choice for Anti-Seepage Projects

HDPE geomembrane (High-Density Polyethylene geomembrane) has become the preferred anti-seepage material for landfill sites, chemical ponds, and water conservancy projects due to its:

Excellent chemical stability
Long service life (over 50 years)
High tensile strength and puncture resistance

According to 2025 market data, HDPE geomembrane accounts for more than 75% of total geomembrane applications, with thicknesses of 1.0–2.0 mm being the most widely used.

2. Pre-Installation Preparation: Base Treatment Determines Success

1. Site cleaning: Thoroughly remove sharp stones, tree roots, and debris to ensure that there are no sharp protrusions on the base.

2. Basic compaction: Compaction degree ≥93% to avoid membrane damage caused by later settlement

3. Flatness requirements: basic surface ±2cm/2m, no obvious fluctuations

4. Laying of protective layer: Lay geotextile (above 300g/m²) under the HDPE film to prevent the membrane from being punctured.

5. Material inspection:
o No damage, no bubbles, no impurities in appearance
o Thickness deviation ≤±5%, in line with design requirements
o Provide a complete test report, including key indicators such as permeability coefficient and tensile strength

3. Key Installation Techniques: Details Determine Quality

Installation Step Technical Requirement Quality Standard
Laying Direction From top to bottom along slope Avoid transverse seams at slope crest or toe
Overlap Width Single-track ≥ 10 cm; Double-track ≥ 15 cm Ensure sealing performance
Slack Control Reserve 1.5%–2% expansion allowance Prevent tearing due to temperature or settlement
Temporary Anchoring Sandbags ≥ 15 kg, spacing 1–1.5 m Prevent membrane movement
Special Areas Corners rounded (R ≥ 50 cm) Avoid stress concentration

4. Welding Process: The Core of Anti-Seepage Performance

1. Double-track hot melt welding: suitable for large-area laying, forming two parallel welds, leaving an air channel in the middle for testing
o Welding temperature: 260-280℃
o Welding speed: 2-3m/min
o Weld width: each pass ≥12mm

2. Monorail hot melt welding: suitable for small areas or corners
o Welding temperature: 280-300℃
o Weld width: ≥20mm

3. Hot air welding: suitable for repair or special node processing
o Hot air temperature: 300-350℃
o Work with the pressure roller to ensure even blending

5. Seam Testing & Acceptance Standards: The Final Barrier Against Leakage

1. Air pressure detection:

o Seal both ends of the weld and inflate to 0.15-0.2MPa
o Keep it for 1-5 minutes, if the pressure drops ≤5%, it is qualified.

2. Vacuum detection:
o Apply soapy water to the weld and cover the vacuum box
o Vacuum to 0.02MPa, if no bubbles are generated, it is qualified.

3. Destructive testing:
o Take 1 set of samples per 1000m², 3 in each set
o The tensile strength of the weld is ≥80% of the strength of the base metal, which is considered qualified.

4. Anchor acceptance:
o Trench anchoring: width 30-50cm, depth 50-80cm, backfill soil compacted in layers
o Layer anchoring: The spacing between stainless steel bars is 50-80cm, and the bolts are firmly fixed.

Conclusion: HDPE geomembrane construction is a systematic project. From basic treatment to final acceptance, every link must strictly follow technical specifications. The above construction points are only used as a standard reference. Actual construction varies widely due to working conditions. Finding a construction team with mature experience can ensure zero leakage, long life and low-cost operation of HDPE geomembrane projects, providing reliable guarantee for various anti-seepage projects.
